Additional Property Attributes

Ohio EPA 3/28/2025 Update: The property consists of parcel numbers: 0201006124003, 0201006124004, 0201006124005, 0201006124006, 0201006124029, 0201006124030, 0201006124031, 0201006124024, 0201006124023, 0201006124022, 0201006124021, 0201006124020, 0201006124019, 0201006124018, 0201006124017, 0201006124016, 0201006124015, and 0201006124014. The National Vapor Stove and Manufacturing Company was established in 1894 to produce heaters, stoves, and furnaces. The company ceased operations in the 1950s and the site has since been occupied by various industrial tenants until approximately 1981. Over the years, selective demolition has taken place, and the site is currently vacant, featuring a 13,000 square foot concrete slab and nine soil stockpiles totaling approximately 40,000 cubic yards. The Property is currently unoccupied and vacant.

The city secured funding from the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) for Brownfield Remediation to remove the remaining concrete slab and impacted subsurface soil. This effort will lead to a No Further Action (NFA) and Clean-Up Status (CNS) designation for the property. The 2023 TBA Phase II sampling was conducted to assess whether the nine stockpiles could be reused as fill on-site. The Phase II assessment revealed that one of the stockpiles exceeded applicable cleanup standards. In 2024, a total of 2,646.22 tons of non-hazardous soil were transported to the Lorain County Landfill for disposal. No backfilling of the area was performed as the excavated materials were removed to pre-existing grade.

Following the cleanup efforts, the site will be redeveloped into 70 owner-occupied affordable housing units.
