Additional Property Attributes

The Site was developed with a school (known as Hudgins School) in at least 1940. At that time, the schoolhouse was located in the southern portion of the Site, and reportedly consisted of a two-story wooden framed structure. Several small ancillary structures were located in the central portion of the Site by the 1940s. The existing Site building was constructed in the mid-1950s and replaced the former Hudgins schoolhouse. Mountain View School opened at the Site in in 1957 and operated until 1965, when the school was shuttered. Aside from some limited use by McDowell County Schools, the Site remained primarily vacant for a number of years before being purchased by Broyhill Furniture Industries, Inc. (Broyhill) in 1980 for the operation of a furniture finishing plant (known as the Ridgewood Plant). Broyhill (and previously McDowell Furniture Co.) operated a furniture plant on the north adjacent property (currently a lumber mill) since at least the early 1900s. The Site operated as a furniture finishing plant between 1980 and the early 2000s. In 2007, the Site and north adjacent mill property were sold to McDowell County Millwork, LLC, for operation of the Bryant & Young lumber mill. Since 2007, the Site has remained primarily vacant except for some limited storage use by Bryant & Young. The Site building is largely unchanged since the 1950s, except for the removal of a former attached gymnasium (far southern portion of the building) which was replaced by a concrete-paved storage lot and the addition of two sheds.
