Additional Property Attributes

The Site is comprised of a 12.5-acre parcel identified as Transylvania County Tax Parcel 8585-39-1604-000 and is in a residential area of Brevard, North Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). The Site is currently overgrown and occupied by remnants of the former Transylvania Tanning Company. Reportedly, the Transylvania Tanning Company owned and operated at the Site from the early 1900s to the 1960s. The tannery is reported to have used the vegetable tanning process, which utilized tannins extracted from chestnut trees. The buildings for the tannery were razed between 1966 and 1970 and most of the Site has remained vacant since the 1970s. In 2015, the City of Brevard purchased the Site and obtained a Brownfields Agreement (Brownfields Project No. 18027-14-088) for the Site in 2021. Previous environmental assessments performed by others at the Site have identified volatile organic compound (VOC) impacts to groundwater, specifically benzene, and metal impacts to soil, predominantly lead. In addition, metal detections in surface water have been identified. Most of the lead impacts were identified in the central portions of the Site. However, in 2017, lead impacts along the eastern side of the Site were detected.
