Additional Property Attributes

The site is located to the west of South Jackson Avenue in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. The subject property, which consists of a vacant elementary school, is comprised of tax parcel number 23-3-3 and is approximately 2.13 acres. According to the Sumter County Tax Assessor, the City of Americus is the current property owner. A title search revealed that the City of Americus has owned the subject property since 1890.

In the earliest Sanborn map reviewed (1895), the subject property appears to consist of Americus Public School No. 1; a boiler is visible in the north area of the school building and is labeled as being housed in the basement. Two small outbuildings are present on the subject property, west of the school building. The subject property appears relatively unchanged in the 1900 Sanborn map. One of the structures to the west of the school building is labeled as consisting of two "water closets" or toilet rooms. The subject property remains relatively unchanged in the 1905 Sanborn map. In the 1912 Sanborn map, the school is labeled as "Furlow Grammar School"; the boiler no longer appears on the Sanborn map. The water closet structure west of the school building is now labeled as one water closet and one storage room. The other small structure that previously appeared west of the school building is no longer present on the subject property. In the 1924 Sanborn map, the previously existing Furlow Grammar School appears to have been removed from the subject property, and a new school building appears in the center of the subject property. The small outbuilding previously used as a water closet/storage room is now labeled as a classroom. The subject property appears relatively unchanged in the remaining Sanborn maps and aerial images until the 2019 aerial image when it appears that a large portion of the northwest area of the school building's roof has collapsed.

At the time of site reconnaissance, the subject property was observed to consist of a vacant, dilapidated school building. The interior of the structure was not accessible to Terracon personnel. Portions of the interior were visible from open windows and doors. Areas of the roof in the northwest corner of the structure were observed to be collapsed. Some areas of the ground flood appeared to have a basement level beneath them while other areas appeared to have only a crawl space.

Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) were not identified in connection with the subject property.

Suspect asbestos and LBP were observed within the onsite structure. Assessments for these non-scope items are recommended, and/or, due to the dilapidated nature of the structure, assume the building's materials are asbestos/LBP containing and dispose of the entire waste stream as asbestos/lead containing materials.
