Additional Property Attributes

The Site consists of two contiguous parcels of land (Alexander County Parcel Identification Numbers [PINs]: 0008619 and 0017541) that total approximately 8.8 acres. The Site is developed with an approximately 15,242-square foot (sq ft) former school building, an approximately 7,758 sq ft cafeteria and gymnasium building, a storage shed, baseball dugouts, a baseball press box, and a standalone restroom structure. The main school building is a one-story brick structure constructed on a crawlspace with two partial basements. Remaining portions of the Site include gravel and asphalt-paved access drives, an asphalt-paved walking track and a basketball court, a baseball field, and vegetated areas. The Site is currently vacant but was most recently occupied by the Alexander County Alternative Learning Program.

The Site was developed with the existing school building (known as Wittenburg School) in the earliest historical aerial photograph reviewed, dated 1950. By the early 1960s, the cafeteria building was constructed to the east of the main school building. A gymnasium was added onto the southern side of the cafeteria building by the mid-1970s. By the mid- 1980s, a basketball court and a shed were developed in the south-central and western portions of the Site, respectively. A baseball field and associated dugouts, press box, and standalone restroom structure were developed in the southeastern corner of the Site between the mid-1980s and early 1990s. In addition, three modular classroom buildings were constructed in the northern portion of the Site. By the late 1990s, three additional modular classroom buildings were constructed in the northern portion of the Site. The six modular classroom buildings were removed from the Site in the early 2000s. Wittenburg School opened at the Site in 1948 and operated until approximately 1999, when the school was shuttered. The Site was occupied by the Alexander County Government offices from approximately 2000 until the early to mid-2010s. An alternative school, run by Alexander County Schools, occupied the Site from the mid-to-late 2010s. The Site has been vacant since 2019.
