Additional Property Attributes

The site includes two parcels totaling 2.7 acres with four buildings: a school, school gymnasium, storage building, and mobile home structure. The gymnasium is home to the Mountain Sports Hall of fame and the other buildings are vacant. The former Wayland High School was constructed in 1941 and used as a high school until 1972, when it renovated and was repurposed as an elementary school. It operated until 1990 when the Floyd County schools were consolidated, and the building was decommissioned. It has not been used since and due to a partial roof collapse, it has deteriorated, and the interior is exposed to the elements. The town would like to save the building, a relic of Wayland's booming mining economy, and use it for lodging and community space.
