Additional Property Attributes

The Site is an approximately 0.14-acre parcel that is located on the southwestern corner of Broadway and East 17th Avenue. It is surrounded by commercial businesses to the east and south and vacant lots to the north and west. The Site consists of a vacant, two-story building that covers the entire parcel. The second floor has collapsed into the first floor and the building is secured with a chain linked fence. The City of Gary plans to demolish the building as part of blight removal. The Site building was built in approximately 1915 and operated as Gary Federal Savings and Loan Association until Lovell's Barbershop moved in and operated from 1969 to 2011. The Site was acquired by tax deed by a private entity with intent to be used as an office for small business owners but a fire erupted in late 2020 which damaged the second floor beyond repair, then water damaged the first floor and basement. The City of Gary Redevelopment Commission acquired the Site in 2024 and the building has remained vacant since.
