Additional Property Attributes

The 33.013-acre property has a rich history, starting as a county poor farm in 1858, later evolving into the Brown County Insane Asylum in 1881, the Brown County Hospital in 1948, and the Mental Health Center in 1972. The center provided psychiatric care, nursing home services, and developmental disability care, serving as a regional hospital for 11 counties until its closure in 2009. The buildings were razed in 2013, leaving the site vacant. Potential contamination includes coal ash from historic heating operations, asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, and demolition debris. Currently, the site qualifies as a brownfield, with Veterans 1st of NEW Inc. exploring its redevelopment for affordable housing for U.S. military veterans while addressing environmental concerns.
