Additional Property Attributes

The Gartrell Memorial High School is a former segregated school for African Americans. The site is listed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places due to its association with African American education in England, AR in the 1960s prior to integration.

The original two-room school was built by 1930. A cafeteria, additional classrooms for different age groups, and a gym were added between 1953 and 1955. A fire in 1960 damaged the building used for high school students, and the adjacent elementary school building was also demolished to rebuild more modern facilities which were completed in 1962. The school closed when the school district was integrated in 1970. The property was briefly used as a vocational training school in the 1970s, but has now been vacant for may years. The buildings are in very poor condition.

The property is currently owned by the non-profit Gartrell Alumni Association. Another non-profit organization, Jazz and Blues on the River, Inc., is a prospective purchaser and has requested assistance in performing a Phase I ESA and hazardous building materials surveys. If the property can be cleaned up and reused, the non-profit would like to provide after-school programs educating students in jazz and blues music.
