Additional Property Attributes

Site consists of 0.46 acres and currently is vacant gravel lot. Historically it was developed in 1890 by a church, a drug store and grocery store. A residence was also present from 1909 through the 1960s. By 1967 the church and residence had been razed. The drug store and grocery store combined into one business and operated as a grocery through the 1980s. From the 1980s through 2017 the building was occupied by Salvation Army as a retail store. The property has been vacant since 2018. The City of Clinton acquired the property via tax sale in 2023. In 2024, the building suffered a partial collapse. After the partial collapse the City demolished the building structure and the property has remained a vacant gravel lot since. An abandoned gasoline station sits along the property. The gasoline station reportedly has five 4,000-gallon underground storage tanks that are still in place. The gasoline station has been closed for several years and the IA DNR has ordered that it be permanently closed and the tanks removed. There is no known leaks at this time but given the proximity to the subject property the city plans to conduct additional assessments to determine if there is any contaminant of concern from the site.
