Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Property used as residence until the 1940s when a restaurant/tea room operated onsite. Between 1940 and 1970, the Red Door Cabins, a motel, operated in addition to the restaurant. At one time, 20 cabins and the restaurant were located at the property. Inventory records indicate eleven of the cabins were heated by fuel stored in aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) for each cabin. A historical photograph shows a gasoline pump island in front of the restaurant. Reportedly, the gas station operated no later than 1977, when the property came under new ownership and only the restaurant building was utilized. From 1977 to no later than 1988, the restaurant building was operated as a dairy bar. The property has not been used for commercial purposes since 1988, when Susan Gardner purchased the property. The two underground storage tanks (USTs) that provided gasoline to the pump island are currently present onsite. The Town of Pownal is currently conducting a wastewater collection installation project and two borings were completed by a Town subcontractor in January 2004 through Center Street in front of the property, approximately 20 to 25 feet downgradient from the location of former pump island and USTs. A soil sample from the interval with the highest PID reading was analyzed and contaminants were detected above method detection limits, although detected concentrations did not exceed EPA Region 9 Residential Preliminary Remediation Goals. Fuel identification indicated the contaminant detected is gasoline, m-alkane range C7-C14. Owners: P Niles until '37, L. Bass '37-'60, J. Bonitati '70-'77, C. Rounds '77-'88 and Rebideau '88- current.
