Additional Property Attributes

The Nespelem Transfer Station is subject to frequent burn events, and neighboring residents complain about poor air quality during these burn events. (PPF Nespelem Transfer Station, 9/18/06). There are ecological indicators of bears and vermin such as rodents. There are recognized environmental conditions with the potential to cause negative ecological and human health impacts. This opinion is based upon data gathered by the Indian Health Service in year 2000. Site shows large amounts of varied solid waste under uncontrolled conditions. No further dumping of solid waste is allowed on the ground.

Former Use: The Nespelem Transfer Station has been used as a solid waste transfer station and landfill since the early 1980's. There are large piles of waste at the site. The waste onsite only appears to be sorted into burnable waste an non-burnable waste. Household waste is diverted into bins for off site disposal. Post burn commercial salvage of recycles metals from tires, wheels and appliances is evident. A backhoe is kept on site for subsurface disposal of solid waste, as well as burial of already burned waste. The waste is not sorted in a meaningful way, and only a relatively small fraction of waste is transported off site to a permanent landfill. IHS data suggests leaching of contaminants to groundwater has occurred. Household waste is burned producing noxious smoke. This site is held in trust for the Colville Tribes, and there is no single owner of the property.
