Additional Property Attributes

The Columbia Lace property is located approximately one mile northeast of Bridgeport State Park park/boat launch located on the Columbia River. The property is hydraulically up gradient from the park/boat launch, and potential contamination may pose a threat to approximately one mile south of the property. This property is also located in an area where the Colville Tribes have been actively purchasing and managing land for wildlife habitat purposes. In 2001, the Colville Tribes purchased approximately 20,000 acres north of the property for the purpose of wildlife habitat preservation. The wetland area created by the standing water on the property, possibly due to subsurface infiltration of irrigation water, is located in a major Pacific waterfowl flyway and is attractive to waterfowl and other wildlife. These animals are tribal resources managed by the Colville Tribes and used by tribal members. (PPF Columbia Lace, 9/18/2006)

Former Use: This property was originally part of a commercial cattle ranch formerly owned by Jack and Melvin Wells, but there appear to be no environmental impacts from this operation remaining on the property. The current owner, Karen Burns, used the property as a commercial flower drying operation for approximately 10 years before it was closed due to flooding in 1996. In general, plants were placed in a glycerin/water/food coloring mixture, allowed to soak, and then dried on the drying racks located on the property. The plants were then painted using a pneumatic paint gun. The flower drying facility used glycerin, methanol, toluene, xylene, oil-based paints, dyes, and pigments to produce the finished dried flowers. In addition, numerous paint containers in varying conditions were observed near the greenhouses and Quonset hut during a 2001 Removal Site Evaluation visit, but were removed during a source removal operation in mid-2002. During peak production years, the facility employed 60-100 people. Since inundation by flood waters in 1996, the commercial operation has been idle.
