Additional Property Attributes

The initial Ohio Voluntary Action Program (VAP) Phase II Property Assessment sampling and testing, funded by an Ohio Department of Development Clean Ohio Assistance Fund (COAF), was completed in the summer of 2004. A fire broke out in the main manufacturing building in mid-October 2004 and subsequent investigations were suspended due to the presence of friable asbestos roofing materials inside the partially collapsed buildings and the inherent unsafe nature of the main manufacturing building. The building required demolition and proper clean-up and disposal of all asbestos containing debris and hazardous structural materials prior to the completion of the Ohio VAP Phase II Property Aassessment.

Former Use: The initial industrial development of the property occured circa 1898 when The Akron Electrical Manufacturing Company, which made electrical motors, constructed a facility on it. In 1907, the Imperial Electric Company acquired the property, and manufactured electric motors at the property from 1907 to 1999. The City of Akron purchased the property in 2000. The property has been vacant since the Imperial Electric Company ceased operations in 1999.
