Additional Property Attributes

This project was intended to expand on the findings of the Phase I completed in 2006 by the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council and included research into options for bank stabilization or removal of waste that is actively eroding into a waterway. Currently funding options are being explored for further work to either remove or stabilize the waste in order to facilitate the desired reuse as a boat ramp and docking area, and to better understand what public health risks, if any, are being posed by this site.

Former Use: This eroding former dumpsite on the south bank of Alakanuk Pass in Alakanuk, Alaska, was reportedly created during construction of a new school in the mid 1970s. The former dump was covered after it was no longer being used, and it was well away from the bank of the pass at that time, but it has since been exposed in the bank by increasing erosion. The community is concerned about potential health risks from this eroding dumpsite, and it has become an eyesore and a hazard on the bank of the pass where they tie up their boats. The Alakanuk Tribal Council would like to enhance and expand use of the area as a boat landing and for subsistence fishing and post-hunting activities, such as moose cutting. The community is seeking assistance in developing a written plan for site remediation and restoration.
