Additional Property Attributes

The Metropolitan Building is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Grand and Olive, midtown St. Louis, MO. This vacant historic property was enrolled in Missouri Department of Natural Resource's Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup in 2005 for oversight of cleanup necessary prior to restoration and reuse. The St. Louis Development Corporation issued a loan for cleanup of the property. Additional state resources (Missouri Brownfields Remediation Tax Credits) and private funding were leveraged to cover the remaining cleanup costs. Cleanup activities included removal and proper disposal of asbestos containing material (ACM), on-site engineering controls (encasement or encapsulation) for lead-based paint (LBP) and implementation of Activity & Use Limitation (institutional control) requiring Inspection and Maintenance in accordance with the Operations and Maintenance Plan (O&M) for the LBP left on site. The building was restored and opened as the Metropolitan Artist Lofts in 2012. This intentional artists community includes 72 bedroom apartments, a gallery, several types of studios (pottery, dance, music, drawing/painting), as well as, community space and an exercise room. Former Use: The Metropolitan Building is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Grand and Olive, in the historic Grand Center Arts & Entertainment District. Midtown St. Louis, MO. Constructed in 1902 with eight-stories with a basement, the building historically was used for office space and retail.
