Additional Property Attributes

The property is proposed to become part of the Hampton Park, a recreational facility with baseball fields, tennis courts, a walking trail, and playground. The Town does not currently have funding to construct the park so the property will remain greenspace until funding is identified. Please note that the "Cleanup Planning" task includes redevelopment planning for the proposed park. No cleanup was required by South Carolina with the exception of abandonment of an on-site inactive water supply well.

Former Use: The subject site was first developed in 1985 as a specialized waste incinerator by Southland. Shortly after beginning its operations the facility also began incinerating medical waste. The property and operations were purchased by Chambers Medical Technology of South Carolina in May 1991. Safety Disposal Systems SDS purchased the property and began site operations in November 1996. SDS was closed down by a SCDHEC Administrative Order in February 2002. SDS subsequently d bankruptcy. SCDHEC referred the facility to the USEPA Emergency Response and Removal Branch to conduct a Removal Action. From February 2002 to January 2003, an USEPA contractor classified and removed potentially hazardous materials remaining at the facility. The incinerator facility remained vacant for several years until late 2007 when the Town of Hampton had the facility demolished. Prior to its development as an incinerator facility, the property was partially utilized for agricultural purposes and contained a small pond or wetland area.
