Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Historically, the site consisted of vacant land from at least the 1940s until the construction of a commercial/retail building in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Based on building department records and historical city directories, the building tenants included a 7-11 Food Store typically associated with fueling operations and various dry cleaning facilities. The building was demolished in the early 2000s and the site returned to vacant land. On 2/27/01, Arlington City Council passed a resolution authorizing the purchase or, if necessary, initiation of imminent domain proceedings for the subject property. This was due to the City's efforts to widen Cooper Street. One of the requirements for the sale was that the owner turn over the property to the City vacant. However, one of the tenants refused to move out and, instead, sued the owner. On 12/14/01, as the purchase of the property still couldnt be negotiated, the City filed a condemnation lawsuit on the property. This remained open until 8/6/03, by this point the tenant had agreed to settle with the property owner, and the owner was finally able to sell the property to the City. The sale took place on 8/5/03.
