Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The City of Springfield assessors records indicate that a building, formerly on the site, was constructed in 1895. The property was used as a residence until 1935. At that time, it was converted to Dwight Street Motor Sales, a gasoline station and used auto dealership owned by Anthony Alimo. Joseph and Dora Barr, the managers of Dwight Street Motor Sales, purchased the building in 1955 and changed the name of the business to Dwight Street Motor Sales and Barr Oil. In 1966, it became Barr Oil Co. and Service Station. Then, in 1970, it was renamed Barrs American Service Station. In 1985, the Springfield Redevelopment Authority bought the property and currently retains ownership. There are no buildings currently on the site, however no information could be found to indicate when the buildings were demolished. A review of historical Sanborn maps indicates several major renovations to structures on the site. Between the years of 1886 and 1896, renovations were made to two residential buildings already on the site and a third structure was constructed. Between 1911 and 1932, the building along the northwest site boundary was removed. Between 1932 and 1950, the building along the southwest boundary was removed and an auto repair garage was constructed on the northern corner of the property. Fuel pumps were also installed within the period between 1932 and 1950.
