Additional Property Attributes

This is a one acre property along the Housatonic River. Its location is ideal for a mixed use development, with available space on each site of the site. It is located within the downtown area, and adjacent to several highway access points and communter rail.

Former Use: The Site is located at 113 East Canal Street, Shelton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and consists of approximately one acre of land owned currently by the City of Shelton. The Site is located on the tax assessors map No. 130, Lots 5 and 6. The Site is located in a downtown industrial area in Shelton, Connecticut currently referred to as the Shelton Enterprise and Commerce Park SECP. The Site is bounded by the Housatonic River generally to the northeast, Canal Street to the southwest, the Chromium Process property to the northwest, and the former Cel-Lastic property currently open green space to the southeast. The Axton Cross site was developed between the late 1800s and 1920 and was occupied by the Shelton Bolt and Tack Works a bolt manufacturer until the mid-1940s. From 1948 until 1971, the land was occupied by the Axton Cross Company a chemical manufacturer. Axton Cross mixed powdered metals, cleaners, and liquid acids. The acids were used to wash containers and were reportedly discharged to the Housatonic River. Historical maps indicate various openings in the building footprint that may possibly have served as discharge points to the ground. The property was subsequently occupied by a roofing company, woodworking shop, and landscaping and carpentry company. Two one-to-three-story brick buildings and a two-story high metal corrugated garage structure were formerly located on the property. The buildings contained several floor drains and an above-ground tank that contained asbestos-containing roofing tar and was coated by black asphalt-containing material. The buildings were demolished by the City of Shelton, and site is currently unoccupied. A portion of the property is periodically used to store construction equipment.
