Additional Property Attributes

Site remediation continued from the prior quarter and was completed by TRC Corporation, Inc. on October 8, 2009. Work through October 2009 included excavation and removal of approximately 342 tons including 150 tons from the prior quarter of gasoline impacted soil, confirmation sampling, backfilling, compaction and removal of sheet pilings. A Release Abatement Measures Completion and Response Action Outcome Statement Report documentation the successful completion of cleanup activities was submitted to and accepted by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection on December 31, 2009. Project closeout documentation was completed and submitted on 4/30/2010.

Former Use: The Site consists of three parcels of land totaling an estimated 0.97 acres located along Granite Street in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The Hayes Building built prior to 1886 is approximately 94,027-square feet and is located along the south side of Granite Street. The paved parking lot parcel is located at the southeast side of the intersection of Granite Street and Essex Street. Historically, the Hayes Building had a myriad of different industrial uses and tenants over the years. The Varney & Hayes Building approximately early 1880s until 1893 appeared to be a planning and paper box manufacturing company shoe boxes. The Clark & Dow building which was located next to the Varney & Hayes Building, before they became just the Hayes Building, appeared to be a tack and wire nail manufacturing company. The Hayes Building was used as a paper box manufacturing company until Western Electric Company owned it in approximately the mid-1900s. The Western Electric Company was an electrical equipment manufacturer. Other known tenants in the Hayes Building are Applied Circuits, A.Z.C.O. Chemical Company, CFR Associates, Emtek Company, Columbia Leather Finish Company, and Frank P Elliott Photo. The northeast portion of the Site has historically been the location of a former Sunoco Station. Local records indicate this gas station was in operation from the 1930s until approximately 1978, when the gas station was demolished. Reportedly, the former gas station was converted to a parking lot in 1978. The northeastern section of the Site is currently used as asphalt-paved parking lot, which occupies approximately half of the Site. The Hayes Building occupies the southwestern section of the Site. Whittier Health Network recenly used the Site for storage for medical/convalescent equipment, supplies, and paper files. A single tenant piano repair/sales business occupied a space on the ground floor at the northeast end of the building.
