Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: During the site investigation in August 2008 the site had a water reservoir, several small buildings and three unused water supply wells. A concrete retaining wall is present along the west perimeter and retains Main Street. The site is unpaved and contained several debris piles. The onsite structures were removed and the wells abandoned in the fall of 2008 by the City of Independence. There is a quarry to north, undeveloped area to the south with trees, residences and the Independence Public Works Facility to the west, and the Willamette River to the east. According to the City the site has always been used as a water supply facility. In 1892 it held an elevated water tank operated by Independence Water Works. From 1902 through early 1980s the site has been operated by various power companies. In 1902 the site was bought by Independence Electric and Water. In 1913 Oregon Power and Pumping bought it. In 1925 Mountain States Power purchased the site. In 1958 PP&L bought out Mountain States Power. PP&L sold the property to the City the early 1980s.
