Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: . The Riverside Mill was constructed in the early 1900s by Mr. James P. Gossett to manufacture thread, yarn, and cloth. Mr. Gossett also operated two other textile manufacturing mills just north of the Riverside Mill: the Toxaway Cotton Cloth Mill and Ladlassie Mill. All of these facilities were sold to Textron Southern in the mid 1940s, and records indicated Abney Mills owned the mills for a period between the 1950s and 1970s. The site of the Riverside Mill Riverside Mill Site and the site of the Toxaway Mill Toxaway Mill Site will hereinafter collectively be referred to as the Mill Sites. Sanborn Fire Insurance maps indicate three plant facilities, which included the Mill Sites the Ladlassie Mill, a shop, two railway spurs, and a small housing area with eight lots and a roadway extension known as East Whitner Street Extension between the years of 1925 and 1948. Field observations have confirmed the historic presence of the plant structures but no evidence of the eight residential structures. From 1902 until 1985, the Toxaway Mill Site was a textile mill that produced fabrics for both clothing and commercial uses. In 1985, the textile industry suffered economic hardship and the Toxaway Mill Site ceased production activities and remained vacant. In June of 2000, the Toxaway Mill Site suffered a fire and a majority of the Toxaway Mill Site was demolished. The Mill Sites were owned by different individuals and entities until Anderson County purchased the Mill Sites in 2004. The Mill Sites became contaminated through the process and manufacturing of textile materials. Construction practices of the early 1900s were responsible for the lead based paint, asbestos, and petroleum based product contamination.
