Additional Property Attributes

Because of the extensive asbestos, lead, and other contamination throughout the complex, the process involved cooperation among tribal entities, EPA, BIA, IHS and the SD DENR to identify funding and resources to accomplish the cleanup project. The Tribe envisions a recreational area, sports fields, and Tekakwitha memorial for the initial stages of redevelopment. Part of the cleanup is being funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Cleanup completed Sept. 2010. Redevelopment of Tribal Memorial Park started in May 2011.

Former Use: Farm, orphanage/boarding school. Fine arts center, substance abuse center owned by Catholic Oblates, Tribe program offices when tribal owned.
