Additional Property Attributes

The City of Springfield has owned the site for over 100 years. According to the Greene County Assessors office, no address or parcel number exists for Park Central Square, as it is seen as a right of way and "municipality" Phase I assessment, p. 4. On the Springfield 7.5 Minute Topographic Quadrangle Map, the site is located in Section 24, Township 29 North, Range 22 West. It is located in downtown Springfield and is used as a park area, road, and sidewalk. The property is comprised of Park Central Square in the central portion with a road that loops the square and concrete sidewalks around the perimeter. The sidewalk on the northeast portion of the site was covered by a metal awning, which has since been removed as part of the redevelopment. A wood-d outdoor auditorium with a metal roof and brick floors is located on the northwest portion of the square. The square has a brick-covered patio in the central portion with a water fountain in the east and metal artwork in the southeast portions. The area surrounding the patio is grass and concrete covered. The size and construction dates of these improvements are unknown. No RECs were identified during the Phase I assessment, which was completed due to an environmental review process needed in order to use HUD-EDI funds to redesign and rebuild the square. Architectural design plans have been completed and portions of the streetscape have been improved, including wider sidewalks, and plans for improved lighting and landscaping are part of the overall concept. 7-18-2011 update by City indicated: Listed in National Register of Historic Places in Spring 2011. Infrastructure under street completely being redone, sidewalks being widened, new landscaping, new concert stage, historical marker will be placed, and property will be ADA compliant. Completion date projected in October 2011.

Former Use: The property has been historically utilized as the Springfield downtown square. The current square design was constructed in the late 1980s, prior to which the square was an intersection with parking at each corner. A trolley system was also present on the site prior to the 1940s. Property listed in National Register of Historic Places in Spring 2011. Redeveloped by City from 2008-2011 to be ADA compliant property.
