Additional Property Attributes

The McGrath Tribal Council Hall, which was known as Chamai Center, was destroyed by fire on December 24, 2006. During cleanup of debris the following summer, the UST that had been located underneath the building was exposed and suspected fuel-contaminated soil was discovered. The McGrath Native Village Council (MNVC) requested a DEC Brownfield Assessment of the site because they would like to use the site for the construction of the New Tribal Hall that will serve as a community gathering place for the Tribal Members of the McGrath Native Village Council. During the site investigation, limited contaminated soil was found associated with the UST, so the UST was removed along with the contaminated soil. As a result, this site was able to be closed. The proposed Multi-Purpose Community Services Center is 5,996 square feet in size. The MNVC has raised $1,005,412 and has applied for a Community Development Block Grant for the additional $850,000 required for the construction of the planned facility.

Former Use: The City of McGrath was incorporated in 1975. The Chamai Center was previously located on the property and was destroyed by fire on December 24, 2006.
