Additional Property Attributes

The city had developed several options for the property, pending the initial assessments. The property will either be converted to a regional park or sold to a private developer for commercial development. A third option has also be proposed a mixed use area with commercial development using the road frontage while the rear of the property and associated wetlands will be converted into a park.

Former Use: The City of Sumter operated the property as an open dump from 1958 until 1972. Prior to 1973, liquid chemical wastes from Southern Coatings, Inc. and Santee Print Works were deposited on-site. The Sumter County Public Works Department was issued a temporary permit to operate the property as a sanitary landfill from 1972 to 1973. The property was operated as an inert and cellulose landfill from 1973 until its closure in 1991.
