Additional Property Attributes

The Site is located at 212-234 South 8th Street in Reading, Pennsylvania and comprises an irregular haped 2.99-acre parcel. The approximate coordinates of the geographic center of the Site are 40.33127� North latitude and 75.92313� West longitude. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the Site is located in a mixed residential and industrial area and is primarily occupied by several vacant connected industrial buildings, an asphalt paved parking lot and a vacant field. The Site is bound by Chestnut Avenue and Deem Street to the north, South 8th Street to the east, Shearers Garden rive to the south, and Norfolk Southern railroad tracks to the west. Lemon Street bisects the Site from north to south. Currently, the entire parcel is developed, with the majority of the east side of the Site (east of Lemon Street) covered by industrial buildings and the west side of the Site (west of Lemon Street) covered primarily by open asphalt paved and gravel areas. The total floor space of all of the buildings is estimated to be approximately 150,000 square feet. The boundaries of the Site are depicted in Figure 2, Site Layout and Building Map.

Former Use: The Site has been subject to an extensive industrial past, including the location of the former Reading Steam Heat Works, Penn Gas Enriching Co., B.F. Ruth and Co. Paint Works, and Crane Co. Iron Pipes. Metal foundries, machine shops, and boiler shops are known operations that historically took place at the Site and may have been sources of contamination since 1887. From the early 1930s to 2002, the property was owned by several different companies which manufactured optical products, including safety eyeglass lenses and s, ophthalmic lenses, sunglass lenses, and reading glasses (Liberty, 2005).
