Additional Property Attributes

The Meadowood County Area Fire Department (Meadowood) site is located on Bowkerville Road on the Fitzwilliam/Troy town line and includes three parcels in Fitzwilliam and two parcels in Troy for a combined total of 8.1 acres. There are six existing structures on the site including an Assembly Hall. Founded in 1950, Meadowood provided specialized equipment and training to fire fighters all over the east coast. According to representatives of the Meadowood facility, most of the firefighting training and equipment was used on the southeast side of Bowkerville Road. Federal and state regulations now prohibit the types of fire exercises that were once prevalent on the property. Meadowood, a 501(c)3 organization, voted to dissolve itself in 2017 and recently offered its property to the Town of Fitzwilliam. According to Town representatives, Meadowood still has not officially dissolved itself yet. The Town has created a task force to help in better understanding of the environmental risks and associated costs of taking on the site and whether its proposed land reuse vision (i.e., recreational) is compatible with environmental conditions at the site. Meadowood currently holds a Groundwater Management Permit for the site for monitoring chlorinated solvent impacts to groundwater. More recently, PFAS has also been detected in two on-site monitoring wells well above NHDES' Ambient Groundwater Quality Standards (AGQS). There is an outstanding request to further investigate the nature and extent of the PFAS contamination.
