Additional Property Attributes

The eastern portion of the Property, known as the Fuel Building was constructed during in WWII and completed in 1942. The building served as the corporate headquarters of the Pocahontas Fuel Company. In 1958, the Pocahontas Fuel Company merged with Pittsburgh Consolidated Coal Company, which then became Consol Energy in 1991. The Fuel Building was used and occupied by these companies until the 1980s, and the site was used as the company's headquarters, which included office space and lab space for coal quality testing. The building was donated to the current owner, Historic Pocahontas Incorporated (HPI) in 2004 and has since been used as office and storage space.

The western portion of the Property, known as the Company Store lot, formerly contained the Pocahontas Fuel Company's Store, which was built in 1882. The former structure contained various stores and offices. Prior to building collapse in 2007 and demolition in 2012-2013, the building was leased as a grocery store and restaurant. The original safe tower from the Company Store building remains standing near the northern portion of the lot. The remainder of the Company Store lot is undeveloped, with portions of former building foundations remaining.

HPI plans to maintain the Fuel Building as a historical landmark and rebuild a replica of the former Company Store to be used for retail purposes.
