Additional Property Attributes

Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) first acquired the property in 1930. The original schoolhouse was built in 1900 and still remains on the property. Additional construction occurred on the property for the first time in 1958, with several other additions made over the following thirty-one years. In 1958, four classrooms were added just south of the original schoolhouse. In 1962, seven additional classrooms were added. In 1966 a library, restroom, and boiler room were added. In 1974, a cafeteria was constructed. In 1989, an administrative area and gym were added, as well as several modular units originally constructed in 1981. It is believed that the site became contaminated during these various construction activities, as many commonly used and approved construction materials during the time period contained asbestos, lead-based paint, and universal waste. The site has historically been used for classroom education. Currently, MCPS leases various classrooms to a number of local organizations that provide childcare services, cancer support, and dance studios, etc. The United Way of Missoula County (a lessee) secured Montana DPHHS funding in 2023 to rehabilitate six classrooms (including asbestos abatement and reconstruction) for independent childcare services that are housed under one roof. The City of Missoula Brownfields Program completed a Phase I - ESA for the entire property in December 2023 which found no RECs but recommended that unassessed portions of the structure be assessed for the presence of hazardous building materials prior to planned renovation or demolition.
