Additional Property Attributes

EPA conducted a Phase I Environmental Assessment at the property. The Phase I Environmental Assessment identified the presence of recognized environmental conditions (RECs) that may be impeding the redevelopment of the property. The RECs included using potential slag material from Bethlehem Steel Works to raise the elevation of the property to prevent flooding; an unregulated underground storage tank containing heating oil had a release at a facility upgradient; and the presense of a form sludge lagoon adjacent to the property was identified. These RECs will be evaluated further during a Phase II Environmental Assessment.

The Site consists of 6.754-acres of vacant land in Allentown's 6th ward along the western bank of the Lehigh River. The land was historically used for industrial purposes as part of Lehigh Structural Steel until 1990. In 1990, the Site was sold to ABE Recycling. The Site is currently owned by the City of Allentown and leased to a private entity (Interstate Safety Services) that uses the site for the storage of concrete traffic barriers.
