Additional Property Attributes

The @ 30 acre site with an elevation of 1,659 ft. is situated along the New River in a rural area with scenic mountainous forested land, agricultural land, residential properties, commercial
properties, and heavy industrial properties nearby. Approximately 1.5 miles from Pearisburg, Virginia with a portion of an active Norfolk Southern Railroad along its southern boundary.
Currently undeveloped, except for a dilapidated water tower, relic industrial structures and concrete used to fill/cover historical vats that were used for industrial processes. Two agricultural
fields, one is located near the northwestern corner and the other on the eastern half. Other areas are densely vegetated with trees and shrubs. Previous reporting states that from 1894 until
1972, the site operated as a tannery. Tannin was made mostly on-site using chestnut and oak bark. From the early 1930?s to the mid 1960?s chemicals used in the plant were sulfuric acid
(stored in two railroad car-sized tanks) and lime. Power and steam were generated via a coal-fired boiler. Tanned hides were not dyed on-site and no metals were used in the tanning
process. To the contrary, literature found that, in the 1930?s, the leather tanning industry used sulfuric acid, lime, chromium compounds, sodium cyanide, arsenic disulfide, hydrogen sulfide,
sodium sulfide, organic solvents, methane, oil and grease, mineral oils, and other chemicals. The tanning process requires large amounts of water, which led to the need for sludge lagoons
and settling basins at tannery facilities. No underground storage tanks are suspected.
