Additional Property Attributes

In partnership with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, the City plans to redevelop this site into a park and nature center for educational and recreational use. Concept drawings have been prepared using a grant from the Packard Foundation. (PPF - Cooley Landing, 7/31/07)

Former Use: A wharf operated on the site from 1848 to the early 1900s. Between 1932 and 1957, San Mateo County operated a municipal landfill on the site. Waste was regularly burned at the landfill. In 1960, Mr. Carl Schoof purchased the middle parcel of the site and used it for residential and commercial boat building activities until about 1990. A layer of construction debris and other fill material ranging from 2 to 15 feet was reportedly placed on the site after that purchase. The Schoof family owned the middle parcel until 1999, when it was purchased by the Peninsula Open Space Trust. In March 2006, the City of East Palo Alto took ownership of the middle parcel. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District purchased the northern and southern portions of the site in 1980. The site has been vacant since 1999, with the exception of a caretaker who resided on the site during a portion of the period between 1999 and 2005. (PPF - Cooley's Landing, 7/31/2007)
