Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: This 2.35-acre property is currently vacant however, has the remnants of a former landfill over a majority of the site. The site was used as the Celanese Village Landfill from the 1930s through the 1960s by residents of Celanese Village, a residential community of Celanese Plant employees, and by the Celanese Plant located 0.75-mile southeast of the subject site. According to environmental reports provided by the Environmental Protection Agency EPA, household and mill wastes including appliances, waste drums, lumber, waste pulp and by-products of rayon fibers manufacturing, and fly ash removed from plant boilers were disposed at the landfill site. Results of 1990 and 1991 site investigations conducted by NUS Corporation on behalf of EPA revealed elevated concentrations of ls and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs in soil. ls and carbon disulfide were detected in surface water however, detected compound concentrations were below EPA Maximum Contaminant Levels MCLs for drinking water. Sediment samples did not identify any ls and only identified low levels of various PAHs. It does not appear that volatile organic compounds VOCs were considered in these assessments. NUS identified surface water as a particular migration pathway because of the nearby Oostanaula River and the use of the Oostanaula as a source for the municipal water supply.
