Additional Property Attributes

English Furniture: The Property abandoned for years was associated with refrigerated railroad car manufacturing prior the 1940s followed by furniture manufacturing operations since the 1940s. The site was rumored to be a toxic superfund site due to the multiple IDEM violations in the 1990s citing: illegal storage of multiple containers of abandoned hazardous wastes including Methyl Alcohol, Acetone, and Methyl Ethyl Ketone without possessing proper permits failure of notification of hazardous waste and storage activities and, failure to comply with standards for owners and operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. According to one of the IDEM reports, English Furniture allowed the deposition of contaminants onto the ground around container storage areas near the back of the facility. IDEM representatives conducted a site inspection and identified seventeen 55-gallon drums of unknown waste and a discolored area on the ground surface on one portion of the site, seven 55-gallon drums of unknown waste with one drum leaking onto the ground surface on another portion of the south. The English Fire Department responded to an initial fire at the English Furniture Company during March 1995 allegedly caused by the burning of hazardous chemicals on the ground surface. During the fire response, several drums were observed by English Fire Department on the Property stacked inside and underneath semi-trailers and at various locations west of the facility. The reaction of chemicals was observed inside some drums without lids. Several of the drums contained puncture holes. The spillage of chemicals from the drums was also observed by the English Fire Department on the ground surface of the Property. Another fire a year later destroyed the manufacturing facility on-site. Given the history of the site, the Town was pleasantly surprised that the Phase II revealed no concerns with the groundwater on-site and only limited concerns with metals in the soils that may be naturally occurring. The Town and County are currently evaluating their options with respect to re-use of the site.

Former Use: The Property is currently owned by English Furniture Company and consists of the remains of a former furniture manufacturing facility. Much of the Property contains dense vegetation and wooded areas. A concrete slab and portions of masonry block wall are the current remnants of the former manufacturing facility. The Property appears to have been associated with furniture manufacturing operations since at least 1940. According to Mr. Mike Benham, the Property was associated with refrigerated railroad car manufacturing prior to furniture manufacturing operations. English Furntire Company acquired the Property from Marann Inc. on December 1, 1995. In 1995, a report stated the alleged burning of hazardous chemicals on the ground surface took place. The fire department observed the reaction and spillage of hazardous chemicals onto the ground from around several 55-gallon drums as well. A 1996 IDEM report listed five violations including the storing multiple containers of abandoned hazardous wastes including Methyl Alcohol, Acetone, and Methyl Ethyl Ketone without possessing a proper permits, failure of notification of hazardous waste and storage activities, and failure to comply with standards for owners and operators of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities for the Property. According to the IDEM report, English Furniture allowed the deposition of contaminants onto the ground around container storage areas near the back of the facility.
