Additional Property Attributes

The western portion of the property is the former Missouri State Penitentiary, which was in use from about 1836-2004. The central area is the former Missouri Surplus Supply facility, and the eastern part is mostly undeveloped woodlands. The area is being redeveloped for commercial use. A new State Public Health Laboratory and Missouri Department of Natural Resources office building have already been completed. A new Federal Courthouse is under construction. Some historic prison buildings will be restored as a tourist attraction.

Former Use: The subject property encompasses approximately 147 acres including 47 acres within the former prison walls and is bounded by the Missouri River and Union Pacific Railroad to the north a privately owned parcel of land to the east Riverside Drive, Capitol Avenue, Lafayette Street, and East State Street to the south and a parcel of land owned by the Jefferson City Housing Authority to the west. The prison, which closed in 2004 after 168 years of continuous operation, is slated for redevelopment. To date, a State Public Health Laboratory SPHL and an office building Lewis and Clark Building for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources MDNR have been completed. A new federal courthouse is under construction at the northwest corner of the former prison however, this area had been deeded to the Federal Government and was not included in the Targeted Brownfields Assessment site area. Future redevelopment calls for additional government buildings, private retail development, and preservation of some historical prison buildings as a tourist attraction.
