Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The subject property was developed as early as 1916 with the Idlewild Clubhouse on the southeastern portion of the subject property. The Idlewild Clubhouse served the Idlewild community as a community gathering place and dining room from 1916 through the 1940s when it was converted into Polks Skating Rink. The skating rink operated through the 1970s when it was abandoned. The Polks building was demolished in the early 1990s. Several other commercial buildings were present to the north and south of East Martin Luther King Drive from approximately 1916 through the 1980s. AKT Peerless was unable to determine exact occupants of these structures, however, based on references in several books, these structures consisted of a pool hall, restaurants, and photography studio. AKT Peerless was unable to determine the location of the original post office, which contained one gasoline pump, and a former log cabin store, which also contained a gasoline pump. Based on the Williams Island area being referenced as the business district of Idlewild, these structures may have been located on the subject property. The existing subject building was originally constructed by Phil Giles in 1948 as the Flamingo Bar, and operated as such until a 500-seat nightclub addition was constructed in 1955. The subject building was utilized as the Flamingo Club from that time until the 1970s when it was vacated. A smaller structure was located north of the Flamingo Club, possibly a small patio area near the lake from at least 1952 through 1965. AKT Peerless observed a concrete slab and concrete blocks in the vicinity of this former structure during the site reconnaissance. The southern portion of the subject property was developed with the existing public park and beach area in the 1990s.
