Additional Property Attributes

Site has been developed into a brewery

Former Use: Based on information obtained during the Phase I ESA, the earliest available records for the subject property were 1884 and the property had already been developed for commercial purposes. As a result, the use of the subject property prior to 1884 could not be determined. Between 1884 and sometime during the early 1900s, several buildings including a woodshed, hog pen, laundry, coach house, icehouse, office, dining room, bar, saloon, and hall were located on the subject property. During the early 1900s, an armory was constructed in the southern portion of the subject property, which operated until it burned down in the mid 1940s. According to Tom Bancroft, City of Cheboygan Fire Chief, following the burning of the building, the site was cleared of debris, the footings were removed, and backfilled. Soil borings completed as part of a Phase II investigation indicated that at least some of the burned building debris and foundation remain on the site. Since the mid 1940s, the southern portion of the subject property has remained vacant and undeveloped. Beginning in at least 1884, the building located in the northeastern portion of the subject property was operated as a saloon, undertaker, variety store, and pool hall, among other service businesses. Operation of the building continued as a pool hall until approximately the mid 1970s. According to Tom Eustice, City of Cheboygan Assessor, the building was demolished in the late 1970s or early 1980s, and has since consisted of a vacant lot. At the time the Phase I ESA site reconnaissance activities were completed on July 15, 2010, the subject property was vacant. The site haas since been redeveloped into a brewery.
