Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The site consists of five parcels of land located at 1, 3, 3R Fort Avenue, 20 Webb Street, and 4 Szetela Lane in Salem, Massachusetts. According to the Assessor�s office, the site consists of approximately 2.4 acres of land. As shown on Assessor�s Map 41, the site parcels are identified as Lot 235 (listed as 1 Fort Avenue), Lot 236 (listed as 3 Fort Avenue), Lot 244 (listed as 3 Rear Fort Avenue), Lot 245 (listed as 20 Webb Street), and Lot 243 (listed as 4 Szetela Lane). The site is currently vacant and undeveloped with some overgrown vegetation. The majority of the site is surrounded by a 6-foot chain link fence with a locked gate. An abandoned railroad spur is situated on the western portion of the site (on Lot 245). The abandoned site is currently owned by the City of Salem. According to previous reports and Tighe & Bond�s review of historical Sanborn mapping for the years 1890, 1906, 1950, 1957, 1965, and 1970, the site was previously part of Collins Cove until this area was filled in the 1890s. By 1950, a building complex occupied by the Crestband Leather Tannery was located on the southeastern portion of the site (Lot 236), and a building occupied by the American Coal Company was located on the western portion of the site (Lot 245) adjacent to a railroad spur. The Crestband Leather Tannery facility is shown on Lot 236 through 1970. The building on Lot 245 is occupied by Sheet Metal Works in 1965 and 1970. Additional filling of Collins Cove occurred between 1950 and 1957 which created the northern portion of the site. However, no buildings were located on this area (i.e., Lots 243 and 244) through at least 1970. At least two fires reportedly occurred at the vacant Crestband Leather Tannery building complex, and the City of Salem had the abandoned building complex demolished in 1986.
