Additional Property Attributes

A Phase I ESA was completed for the Hess Property on 1/20/12. The ESA identified that a acid chamber and pyrite furnace building associated with a fertilizer plant were located on the property. Additionally, the ESA found that elevated metals due to disposal of barrels exist on the property. Lastly, asbestos containing materials were also observed at the site. A Phase II ESA was recommended to assess the environmental quality of site soils, groundwater, surface water and sediment; however, the current owner did not give permission to complete the Phase II ESA.

Former Use: The Property has been owned by the Amerada Hess Corporation since 1969. Prior to Hess, the site was owned by Hewitt Oil Terminal. The southern portion of the property contains a bulk fuel storage terminal, which was not included as part of the ESA. The ESA covered the northern portion of the property, which is currently developed with a gravel parking area and boat ramp. This portion of the property is leased to the Charleston Fishing Club. The Phase I ESA identified a former fertilizer plant in the northern portions of the Property. A Phase II ESA was recommended; however, the owner would not allow access to complete the assessment.
