Additional Property Attributes

Located on the Site are many partially to wholly demolished structures, remnants of the Sites historical use as a cement manufacturer. There are two relatively complete structures located on the Site. One of these, located in the northern portion of the Site, consists of 18 concrete silos used in the cement process. The other, located in the central portion of the Site, was used as an office building.

Former Use: he Site was originally owned by the Carnegie Steel Company in 1906, beginning production in 1907. The Carnegie Land Company conveyed the land to the Universal Portland Cement Company in January 1923. The Portland Cement Company acquired the Atlas Cement Company in 1930 and was rebranded as the Universal Atlas Cement Company, a subsidiary of the US Steel Corporation. The Universal Atlas Cement Company ceased operations in 1979. Lehigh Portland Cement Purchased the Site from US Steel in 1980. The current owner, MMG, acquired the Site from Lehigh Portland Cement Company in October 1993. The Site was primarily used for the production of cement from approximately 1907 to 1979. However, a small steelmaking pilot plant was located at the Universal Atlas Plant and operated by US Steel. This portion of the former cement plant that was used for research and development of steel is currently not included within the Site parcel, and is located primarily on the former US Steel research building and AAA Steel & Enterprises Corporation parcels. The Universal Atlas Cement Plant used limestone and blast furnace slag to produce Portland cement. Raw materials were pulverized and fed into kilns fueled primarily by coal. Finished cement was stored in large on-Site silos until delivery, normally via rail. Pitch tar, generated by US Steel Chemicals, was also burned in the kilns.
