Additional Property Attributes

Mather Inn Enterprises intends to redevelop the approximately 1 acre subject property as a mixed-use residential and commercial development. The site was historically developed as a hotel and restaurant in 1931. A 28,000 square foot four story building is located on site. The Mather Inn is individually listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and the Michigan State Historic Registry. The Inn will be rehabilitated to preserve and restore its historic architecture and landscape which contribute to its significance as a valuable cultural resource. The original 1931 architectural and landscape plans are the basis of the restorative work.

Former Use: The property was first developed in 1875 as a hotel/inn. The first structure was destroyed by fire in 1879 and replaced with a second hotel. The second hotel was also destroyed by fire in 1928. The current hotel building was completed in 1932 as the Mather Inn and was utilized as a hotel until 1984. The property was vacant from 1984 to 2004, when redevelopment activities began. The building is currently under renovation with a brew-pub on the ground floor (Cognition Brewery), commercial banquet space on the main floor, and private apartments on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors.
