Additional Property Attributes

The site will continue to be used as a historic landmark for locals and tourists to visit. Its historical nature and significance is a historic asset of the Upper Piedra community.

Former Use: Debs Schoolhouse was built by Walt Coors in 1926 and served as the only school in the Upper Piedra region of Hinsdale County until 1951, when consolidation forced its closure. As the only public building in the Upper Piedra region, the school was also a community focal point, hosting a wide variety of activities. In physical characteristics it is typical of rural schoolhouses. Constructed in 1926 of rock face ornamental concrete block, utilizing local sand and gravel, it is one of only two ornamental concrete block rural schoolhouses identified in the State. It is Hinsdale County's sole surviving one-room schoolhouse. Today, the building is often viewed by visitors and is now being used primarily for its historic significance. It is at times used as a community gathering place, but is mostly a tourist stop for visitors due to its historic significance and scenic beauty.
