The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) conducted a Phase I Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) on approximately 10.5 acres of vacant land located southwest of the intersection of Marble Road and Campbell Drive in Fort Scott, Kansas. The BTA was conducted for the Bourbon County Economic Development Council through the KDHE Coalition Assessment Grant # BF 97741501 - petroleum substance funding. The property is targeted for expansion of the industrial park. Based on the Phase I report, no "Recognized Environmental Conditions" (RECs) were identified in connection with the subject property and the property is cleared for redevelopment.

Former Use: The assessment site consists of one vacant, mostly undeveloped parcel that occupies approximately 10.5 acres in southern Fort Scott, Kansas. The parcel is located southwest of the intersection of Marble Road and Campbell Drive. The site spans west to the US Highway 69 right-of-way and south parallel to the highway north of E. Hudson Road. Active commercial/industrial facilities bound the tract to the north, south, and east. The U.S. Highway 69 right-of-way and parallel drainage improvements adjoin the assessment site to the west. The assessment site is owned by the Development Council which is not actively utilizing the site for any specific purpose. Most areas of the site are vacant grass-covered land with current drainage and former railroad improvements. Topographic maps in 1893 show the assessment site as undeveloped land with the Gulf Railroad to the east. Site conditions persist to aerial imagery recorded in 1957 that show the assessment site as agricultural land. Surrounding commercial development is noted in the early 1980's. Previous owners of record include individuals (or respective trusts) and Fort Scott Industries, Inc. Other historic corporate interests were not identified; however, a comprehensive chain-of-title review was not performed.
