The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) conducted a Phase I Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) at Kanza Park located at 200 W 15th Street in Ottawa, Kansas. The BTA was conducted for the City of Ottawa through the KDHE Coalition Assessment Grant # BF 97741501 � petroleum funding. The City is the current owner and intends to renovate the 27.5 acre park. Based on the Phase I report, no �Recognized Environmental Conditions� (RECs) were identified in connection with the BTA property, and the property is cleared for redevelopment.

Former Use: The project site currently consists of a park, with no structures and approximately 27.5 acres located at 200 W. 15th Street in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. The site elevation is approximately 905 feet to 900 feet and the topographic surface runoff is towards the northeast. According to historical documentation, the project site has been vacant grass-covered land since approximately the 1880s. Between 1969 and 1983, graded land and apparent residential structures in the southwest corner of the site were present. In 1985, the walking trail and parking lot appears to have been developed, which is still present today. The current site owner is the City of Ottawa who obtained the title on October 16, 1984 from George L. Chaney, based on review of information obtained from the Franklin County, Kansas GIS online assessor's records.
