The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) conducted a Phase I Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) on two parcels totaling approximately 58.29 acres located at 0 and 1120 E. Cole Street in Moundridge, McPherson County, Kansas. The BTA was performed for the City of Moundridge, who currently owns the property and intends to assist a prospective purchaser in reusing for commercial development and a frontage road. Based on the Phase I report, "Recognized Environmental Conditions" (RECs) were identified as potential hazardous substances and/ or petroleum products due to the historical property use for oil production over approximately 25 years, and staining associated with crude oil storage tanks on the southwest corner of the property. Based on the identified RECs, a Phase II investigation is recommended. Due to the potential for soil and/ or groundwater contamination, a Phase II assessment was completed in June 2016. Based on the soil and groundwater data obtained during the Phase II BTA activities, VOCs or total hydrocarbons were not identified above applicable KDHE standards. Investigative results indicate further investigation is not necessary through the Brownfields Program and the property is cleared for redevelopment.

Former Use: The subject property is approximately 58.29 acres of developed municipal property in Moundrige, Kansas. The site elevation is approximately 1481 to 1493 feet above mean sea level with an estimated groundwater flow towards the southwest. The site history of the subject property has always been agricultural land (fractions of the land), an airport since approximately 1982 and oil activity from 1977 to 1985 (2 wells and a tank storage system). The City of Moundridge acquired the property in 1973 from private owners.
