Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Ute-Ulay Mine and Mill Ute Portal and Row Buildings and Assay Office buildings are part of the larger property associated with the Ute Ulay Mine and Mill site The Ute-Ulay Mine and Mill site is an inactive gold, silver, lead, and zinc mining/milling operation located near Lake City, Colorado, in the Henson Creek watershed. The Ute-Ulay Mine was established in 1871, and the mill was erected in 1882. The Galena Mining District is located along Henson Creek starting in Lake City and extending west to the Ouray and San Juan County lines. As the name indicates, the predominant ore produced and marketed from the district was lead sulfide. At the turn of the 19th century , the countys largest producer was the Ute and Ulay veins located about four miles up Henson Creek. The mine was equipped with a 100-ton per day concentration mill, which yielded a product high in lead. The machinery and processes at the Ute-Ulay mill are described to include a number of mechanical or hydraulic crushers, rollers, sizers, and settling tanks. No mention is made of any chemicals used in the milling process, and it is stated that the concentrate (salable product) was shipped from the mill in railroad cars. The concentrates leaving the mill are said to have contained 58 to 61 percent lead, 13 to 15 ounces of silver, and 0.05 to 0.06 ounces of gold per ton. They represent about 16 percent in weight of the original ore and an extraction of about 80 percent of the lead and 65 percent of the silver. The non-economic mill tailings were transported in a slurry form via a wooden flume to the unlined settling impoundments at the Upper Tailings Impoundments Area. Mining and milling activities have not been conducted at the Ute-Ulay Site for many years.CDPHE has previously conducted a total of two (2) Phase I and three (3) Phase II Environmental Site Assessment at the Ute-Ulay Site for Hinsdale County as part of an overall assistance to aid Hinsdale County in accepting donations of the Site.
