Additional Property Attributes

Phase I Environmental Assessment recommended additional testing/sampling be conducted to confirm no impact from potentially a historical use of coal as a heating source on the property. Further testing and sampling for asbestos and lead were also recommended given the age of the structure. The property owner indicated under additional review no contaminants were found on the property. Therefore no further investigation is needed at this time and the site is ready for reuse.

Former Use: This a two-story limestone home built in ca. 1864-1865 consists of a house museum of approx. 1,240 sf situated on approx. 0.50 acres of land. The building was purchased by Grace Mattes Young, wife of Joseph Young, ca 1911. Joe Young secured the Bellevue State Park (dedicated in 1928) and was a pioneer in securing and developing the Great River Road. Through a trust the property was donated in 1959 to be used as a museum, its official grand opening held in 1966. The museum closed in 2014. After the trust fund was expended in 2016, it was prepared for sale. In 2017, an assessment was completed on the site and after further investigation no contaminants were found on the site. In 2018, the nonprofit "Friends for Preservation of Bellevue Heritage" acquired administrative rights to the trust and is working to revise and reopen the museum by 2022 to a broader audience.
