Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Montezuma County Justice Building was built in the mid 70s as a joint City/County effort to provide upgraded facilities for local law enforcement. Prior to that time all county services were conducted out of the Courthouse on Main Street including law enforcement, detentions and courts. By the early 1970s it had become apparent that the Courthouse on Main was no longer adequate to meet the increasing demands of the justice system so the City and County partnered to develop the Justice Building. Under this partnership the City owns the land surrounding the justice building and the county owns the building. In the late 1990s Montezuma County passed a bond to assist in building a new detention center and Sheriff's Department. With the sheriff's department and detention facility relocated, a remodeling effort was undertaken which re-purposed the old jail portion of the building into the bridge emergency shelter for the homeless, for which the community was in great need. At the same time the building was remodeled with additional rooms added for the Judicial Branch and a new roof to cover the former prisoners' recreation yard which is located in the central portion of the building. Currently the building serves the Judicial Branch with two courtrooms, court clerk, and probation. In addition the Bridge Emergency Shelter also operates out of the building. The building also provides meeting space for several court education programs as well as for the local historic society who also utilize some of the smaller basement rooms for storage.
